Alleged OpenIV Cease&Desist sent by Take-Two

[float=right][tweet]https://twitter.com/OpenIV/status/875078358912172035[/tweet][/float][The following information hasn't been verified, and could be incorrect. This news post is based on the words of OpenIV's lead developer.]
According to the official OpenIV twitter, the modding software has been requested to be taken down by Take Two, GTAV's publisher, to which the OpenIV team responded with taking the software offline.

The Cease-and-Desist letter which was received on the 5th of June claims:

OpenIV allows third parties to defeat security features and modify the software in violation of Take-Two's rights.

If this holds true then from now on modding GTA is deemed illegal, and will most likely force all modders, who worked on their mods, for years, assuming that some of them were there since GTA III, to take down all their work.

What do you think about it?

Do you think that Take-Two is right about this? I personally think that stating the work of thousand of people suddenly illegal is not okay, specifically because many mod authors put a lot of time into their creations. What if this happens someday to PAYDAY 2? Looking at how there now is a precedent, we could have this happen at any time. We can only hope that Take Two changed their mind after all this bad publicity. Feel free to post your thoughts about it.

There's an assumption that the C&D letter is fake and not from Take Two themselves
But until Take Two themselves said anything about whether the letter is true or not, the GTA modding dev already stopped distribution and it could already be the 1st step to a game death :|

Bethesda: “Man we really screwed up. We seriously pissed off our modding community. I cant think of what we could have done worse”

Take-Two Interactive: “Hold my beer”

i was actually waiting for a parallel online mode without depending on the sharkcard bullshit. I guess i'll dream it now if it's true

inb4 2017 becomes the year game modding dies

Take Two Interactive is known for such awful decisions, they literally don't want any of the players to have fun and let's not forget that they sent in two PI's to the FiveM team, straight at their doorstep. And also I am pretty sure that some people already know that they will force MT's on the upcoming sequel for a few videogame from RG.

This is indeed rather strange given the statement from 2015 saying that they allow modding of the game as long as it does not touch online.
Either this letter is fake (my personal thoughts, they pointed out errors in the letter that no self respecting legal team would have) or they're determined to piss people off.

There already is one. It's called FiveM

Isn't that also been taken down by Rockstar themselves?

They gave a cease & desist to it's original developer (banned him from modding), but it seems that someone else has picked up his projects (hell some Ruskies picked up his IV CitizenFX mod but since one of their devs died they stopped working on it)

There are so many things wrong with that publisher.

Take-Two recently acquired Kerbal Space Program. They haven't done anything with it yet but people are really worried that they're gonna add in MTs and potentially curb modding, if not try to stop it. (The game currently saves save data in plain text so that you can edit it if something breaks or if you just wanna cheat, but I would not put it past Take-Two to force the devs to reprogram the save system.)
